Face Rank Applying For: Queen of Hearts

History: Rose Waylett was born the daughter of local crime “boss” Pauline Waylett and her husband Jeffrey and she was raised to carry out the family business. It started out with the 'easier' things– five-finger discounts and pickpocketing, and escalated to breaking and entering, carjacking, and the like. Never anything to directly injure someone– it wouldn't to have that on the family's reputation, after all– but always something that would leave them a little... lacking compared to what they'd previously had in material possessions. What her father and elder brothers did with the acquired goods, Rose was never really certain– she, Pauline, and her younger sisters dealt with more of the getting, and left the men to deal with the getting rid of. She never really understood why they did what they did– nor did she enjoy it much the same way her parents and siblings seemed to– but any time she was asked, she was only told it was “what the Wayletts do,” and she wasn't to question it.

She never did learn not to question it, but she did learn quickly enough not to ever ask aloud.

When Rose was 16, she finally decided she'd had enough. Packing only what she could carry, she left her home on the Isle of Man and fled to the mainland, no clear destination in mind. If anybody asked, her name was Rowan Maclean and she was taking some time off of school to see the world. After a few months of wandering, she ended up wandering onto the Hearts' outpost. Once it was explained to her what exactly she'd found, she stayed, and quickly learned to adopt the Deck accent. Soon, it was as though Rose Waylett had never existed.

Upon her arrival, she entered the security field (takes a thief to catch one, after all) and rose steadily up the Ranks, stopping at Eight until June 2012. At that point, Jordan Novak Challenged up to Ten and claimed Head of Security, a position she'd been toying with achieving for some time. It prompted her to go for Nine, and once she achieved the Rank she became Jordan's Assistant Head of Security.

Since Jordan's switch to the Spades in January 2013, Rowan has become the de facto head of the department, although King Tunde had yet to make the position official before being Challenged. Despite not formally having the title, Rowan nonetheless has worked as hard as she would have if she possessed it, even though her attention has of late been divided between the typical Security work and the work necessary to help those recently affected by the latest Deck problems.

Personality: As a former thief, she's fairly analytical and perceptive. While these are certainly useful traits to have, it can cause her to have a bit of trouble as she will note quickly the flaws in others-- most often those of a higher Rank than her, due to some lingering authority issues. A part of her is still that rebellious teen that left her family all those years ago, and in her earlier years on the Deck, it ended up with her getting into trouble for talking back to some of the more strict higher Cards. More often, she tries to channel that fiery spirit into whatever she's working on in an attempt to try to avoid trouble.

On the other hand, though, she is still very much the young woman who allowed herself to be silenced by her mother's displeasure with her constant questioning of the family's livelihood. This means that nowadays, instead of talking back to a higher-up she doesn't get on with or doesn't believe is doing their job well, she'll simply smile to their faces, do whatever they need her to do, and then go off to seethe internally. When she thinks the time is right to, she puts herself in the position to deal with the ones she views as a 'problem' by advancing in Rank, typically by Challenging them.

That being said, she adores most of the other Hearts and the mother hen-ing tendencies that were once applied towards her younger sisters are now directed towards the members of the foster family her Suit has become. Whenever charged with a task or whenever she sees something wrong she knows she can fix, she will do it with every intention of doing it well. Much though her oft-hidden vitriol can make her feel more like someone who belongs in a Sharp Suit, there is a softness to her still-- a need, perhaps, to make up for the unkindness her family showed others in the past-- that makes her still very much a Heart.

Character's Goals/Ambitions: She knows that someday she would like to take on a Face Card position in her Suit, although she worries, sometimes, whether taking on such power would lead her to be more like her mother-- a brilliant woman and a good leader, yes, but a little blind to her own failings. She trusts, however, that her own eyes which sees the faults in others will continue to show her her own, and she knows she's friends who would tell her the same. Since she currently does not believe she will be selected for Queen, she instead is content to settle with her current position of leadership and hopes ardently that now that there's a new King at the helm, hopefully soon being confirmed as the Hearts' Head of Security.

Were she to be appointed the position of Queen of Hearts, however, she would be forced to do the growing up she currently feels she needs to do before being ready to Challenge for it. Being at the top of the Suit, there wouldn't be any 'authority figure' she'd have beef with, and that would actually enable her more sensible and compassionate parts-- the parts of her that already work to benefit the Suit-- to flourish more. In an effort not to become the kind of leader her mother was, she would spend just as much time out of the office interacting with the other Cards in her Suit and trying to build rapport with them. She wants to be a Queen they can relate to and feel comfortable speaking with even about the small things, as she feels it important for the Faces to be connected to the Numbers, or else they lead the Suit to having all sorts of problems.

Why should they be chosen for this position? Despite the issues she may have had adjusting to the system of the Deck when she was younger, Rowan has at surface level adjusted well into the hierarchy of the Deck. Although only a Nine, she has clearly shown her devotion to the Suit in that she will do just about anything to help the people in the Hearts. Because they are her replacement family, she has connected to many of them personally, being at least good acquaintances if not friends. Since she is so analytical, she will analyze her own views and actions as a Face at every step to ensure she is doing what is best, and will listen to criticism if offered to her. Additionally, in recent times she has already proved her mettle as a leader as the unofficial Head of Security since Jordan Novak's switch, and has taken initiative to go out among the Hearts in Town and those affected by the disappearances to ensure they're all right.

Appearance: Standing at 5'5", Rowan is at just the right weight for her height and slightly more muscle than fat. She tends to walk with a quick, quiet step-- a holdover from sneaking around in houses-- and often does yoga to help keep her frame supple. She often wears either tight-fitting or fairly low cut blouses to show off what she considers her "best assets," and prefers jeans or yoga pants to formal wear, though she can certainly rock a dress if necessary. She prefers wearing her hair long, down, and slightly curled, and on days when her contacts are being particularly difficult, wears black-rimmed glasses to help with her mild farsightedness.
